Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2024, candidates must fulfill certain age limit, academic qualifications and number of attempts criteria.

Age Limit

There is no age limit to appear for JEE Advanced 2024. Candidates who were born on or after October 1, 1999 are eligible to apply.

Academic Qualifications

Candidates need to fulfill the following academic criteria:

  • They must have cleared Class 12th or equivalent qualifying examination with minimum 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST candidates).

  • They should be among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates in B.E./B.Tech. Paper of JEE (Main) 2024.

Attempts Allowed

A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced maximum of two times in consecutive years irrespective of whether or not he/she passed the qualifying examination.

The number of attempts will be three for SC/ST candidates who have availed of the relaxed criterion of qualifying marks in the qualifying examination.

Exam Pattern

The JEE Advanced 2024 exam will consist of two objective-type papers designed to test candidates' knowledge of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

  • Format: The exam is fully computer-based with a combination of multiple choice questions (MCQs), numerical value questions and drawing-based questions.

  • Number of Papers: There are two separate question papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Candidates must appear for both papers on the same day.

  • Subjects: The major subjects tested are Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

  • Sections: Each paper is divided into three sections - Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

  • Number of Questions: Each paper will have a total of 24 questions - 8 questions from each section.

  • Marking Scheme: Questions carry different marks depending on their difficulty level. Integer type questions carry +3 marks for correct answers and -1 for incorrect. Questions requiring a numerical value as the answer have +4 marks for correct response and no negative marking. Drawing-based questions have +4 marks with no negative marks either.

  • Total Marks: The maximum marks for each paper is 180. So the total marks for JEE Advanced is 360 marks.

The exam pattern aims to thoroughly test a candidate's conceptual knowledge and analytical abilities across the three subjects through a balanced mix of question types. Mastering time management across sections is also critical for success.

  • The total number of test centers may vary from the previous year, depending on the number of registered candidates and logistical factors. However, IITs aim to allocate centers in a way that reduces travel time and cost for students.

  • Candidates must choose their preferred exam cities at the time of registration. Efforts are made to allot the chosen city, but it is subject to availability.

  • The exam centers are selected by IITs based on capacity, infrastructure and geographic location. Reputed engineering colleges, schools or institutes with proper exam infrastructure are generally chosen.

  • Computer based test centers will have proper seating arrangements, lab facilities and power backup to ensure smooth conduct. The centers will be monitored closely through CCTV cameras.

Results

The JEE Advanced 2024 results will be declared on June 10, 2024 on the official website. The results are announced in the form of All India Ranks (AIR) which will be used for admissions into the IITs.

The JEE Advanced 2024 merit list will be prepared based on the candidate's scores in Paper 1 and 2. The total marks obtained out of 396 will be considered for AIR.

Candidates have to fulfill the minimum cut off marks in each subject as well as overall to be included in the rank list. The marking scheme is relative grading - the marks are normalized based on the difficulty level of the exam.

Along with the scorecard, the JEE Advanced 2024 toppers list will also be announced. The All India Topper will be the candidate who secures the 1st Rank in the Common Rank List (CRL). He/she will be awarded a gold medal.

The JEE Advanced 2024 toppers will comprise the top 10 candidates who have scored the highest marks. In 2021, Mridul Agarwal from Delhi zone emerged as the topper by scoring 348 out of 396 marks.

Cut Offs

The cut off marks for JEE Advanced 2024 will be released by IIT Bombay after the declaration of results. The cut offs vary every year and depend on factors like the difficulty level of the exam, number of applicants, and availability of seats.

Category-wise Cut Off Marks

Based on previous years' trends, here are the expected cut off marks for JEE Advanced 2024:

  • General Category - Around 120-125 marks (out of 396)

  • OBC-NCL - Around 105-110 marks

  • SC - Around 70-75 marks

  • ST - Around 50-55 marks

The cut off marks are the minimum required score to be eligible for ranking and admission through JEE Advanced.

Cut Off Trends from Previous Years

  • In JEE Advanced 2021, the cut off for general category was 87.89 while for OBC-NCL it was 68.01.

  • In 2020, the cut off marks were significantly higher with general category being 96.66 and OBC-NCL 74.28.

  • The cut offs have followed an increasing trend over the past few years as the exam has become more competitive.

  • The cut off marks are expected to be higher in 2024 compared to 2023 as more students will be attempting JEE Advanced after the normalization of Covid situation.

Aspirants should aim to score well above the expected cut off marks to secure a good rank and chance of admission into top IITs. The final cut offs will be available only after the exam results.

Counselling Process

The counselling process for JEE Advanced is conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). This centralized process facilitates admission to various IITs, NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs based on the candidate's rank and preferences.

JoSAA Counselling Schedule

The JEE Advanced counselling schedule is announced by JoSAA after the declaration of JEE Advanced results. The counselling process typically begins in the month of June every year. There are multiple rounds of seat allocation:

  • Mock Seat Allocation

  • Round 1

  • Round 2

  • Round 3

  • Round 4

  • Round 5

  • Round 6 (Spot Round)

Candidates have to lock their choices and submit willingness for each round by the stipulated dates. Seat allocation is done based on merit, choices filled and availability.

Seat Allocation Process and Rounds

The detailed seat allocation process involves steps like registration, choice filling, mock seat allocation, main rounds and final seat acceptance. Candidates can withdraw from the process at any stage if they wish to. Seats are allocated based on JEE Advanced rank, choices filled, category and availability. Higher ranked candidates get preference.

Multiple rounds of counselling are conducted to allow candidates to change their choices and upgrade to better options if available. Unfilled seats get released for next rounds.

Documents Required

Candidates must carry the required documents in original during reporting after seat allocation:

  • JEE Advanced 2022 admit card
