Where were the author and his companion going? What did they do to speed up the journey?
The author and his companion were going to Winnipeg. To speed up the journey, they decided to jump a freight train and intended to beat a fast overland passenger train at night, which would convey them four or five hundred miles before daybreak. They secretly took possession of an empty car at a station and when the fast train arrived, they attempted to leap onto the platform of a blind baggage car while the train was in motion. They believed if they were to possess this car, no man could approach them until they reached the next stopping place.
