The Banjaras were the most important nomadic traders. They travelled in a caravan called tanda. Alauddin Khalli used the Banjaras to transport grains to the city markets. Jahangir writes in his memoirs 'Tuzuk-1Jahangiri' that the Banjaras carried grain on their bullocks from different areas and sold it in towns. They also helped in transporting foodgrain for the Mughal army during military campaigns. In a large army there could be one lakh bullocks carrying grains. Peter Mundy, an English trader who arrived in India in the early seventeenth century, has described the Banjaras. "In the morning we met a tanda of Banjaras with 14,000 oxen. They were all laden with grains such as wheat and rice. These Banjaras carry their household - wives and children - along with them. They own their oxen. They are sometimes hired by merchants, but most commonly they are themselves merchants.
