About the Author - Planning a Surprise | New English Ferry | Class 8 Literature | English
Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist and poet best known for her novel "Little Women". Born on 29th November 1832 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Alcott had an unconventional upbringing as her family was deeply rooted in the transcendentalist movement. Despite facing financial difficulties, her family fostered a love for literature and activism. Alcott didn’t receive formal education; instead, she was taught by her father and eminent family friends like Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. The Civil War compelled Alcott to serve as a nurse, and her experience inspired her to write about women's issues and their role in society. "Little Women", based largely on her own experiences, is considered her masterpiece and remains a classic coming-of-age story enjoyed by readers around the globe. Alcott was an ardent feminist and abolitionist, and her works often encapsulated and advocated her beliefs. She died on March 6th, 1888.
