Had Bepin Babu really lost his memory and forgotten all about a trip to Ranchi?
Bepin Babu meets a man who claims the two of them met in Ranchi six to seven years prior. However, Bepin Babu is sure he has never been to Ranchi. He confirms this with a friend who also has a clear memory of Bepin Babu’s trip to Ranchi. Despite this, Bepin Babu still doesn’t remember and decides to visit Ranchi in hopes of jogging his memory but to no avail. He comes back to Calcutta convinced he’s losing his mind, only to find a letter from his old school friend Chunilal, who had earlier asked him for a job. Chunilal confesses in the letter that he had set up an elaborate ruse to trick Bepin Babu into believing he had been to Ranchi as a form of payback for not helping him when he was down on his luck. So, Bepin Babu did not lose his memory. He had never taken a trip to Ranchi.

Satyajit Ray is one of the most prominent Indian filmmakers and authors of the 20th century. He was born on May 2, 1921, in Kolkata, India, into a highly artistic and intellectual family. His father was a poet, writer, and illustrator, while his grandfather was a writer of children's literature.
Ray began his career as an illustrator and graphic designer but later moved into filmmaking after meeting the French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's film Bicycle Thieves while in London. His style of filmmaking is known for its humanistic perspective, and his naturalistic style often dealt with complex ideas and issues.
In addition to his work in cinema, Ray also wrote numerous short stories, novels, poems, and articles. His works often featured elements of fantasy and were directed primarily towards children and adolescents. Much like his films, his written works were characterised by a humanistic perspective that highlighted the lives of everyday people.
Among his numerous accolades, Ray won an honorary Oscar in 1992 for lifetime achievement shortly before his death that same year. His works continue to be beloved and admired for their deep humanity, simplicity, and masterful storytelling.
